Name three things that you should know about any position on a candidate’s resume that you are talking to that candidate about.

Do they supervise/manage others? – indicates candidate’s level of responsibility and management capabilities.
Who do they report to? – indicates the type/level of exposure that they are getting, who they are being trained by, what kind of company culture that they are working in (e.g. a local or foreign supervisor).
Who do they interact with? – also indicates the type/level of exposure that they are getting.  For instance, do they often deal with local or foreign customers, local or overseas operations and parties, or large or small clients.
Scope of responsibilities – indicates the caliber/impressiveness of their achievements.  For instance, are they developing, implementing, running, growing, building, leading, defining, and identifying things, or just coordinating, following up, supporting, liaising, communicating, and executing things?

Identify three things to qualify with a candidate that can reveal to you more accurately the quality of a candidate’s particular achievement?

Who did they do the work for? – this can indicates the type/level of standards that they had to meet.  For instance, do there is a big difference in what you need to deliver when dealing with a local or foreign customer, local or overseas operation and party, or a large or small client.
What exactly was their involvement with the result? – this indicates the type/level of contribution that they made to the final result.  For instance, it requires much greater capability to develop, implement, run, build, lead, define, or identify something than to just coordinate, follow up, support, liaise, communicate, or execute something.
Did the thing they do exist already, or did they have to create/develop it? – this indicates the type/level of capability that they possess.  For instance, it is much more difficult to create/develop a new system than to just implement one from headquarters.  Similarly, it is much more difficult to sell into a new account than into an existing one.

 

What are three things to qualify with a candidate that can reveal to you more accurately the quality of a candidate’s background?

Who he/she has worked under/learned from - indicates how they were trained, company culture they are working in, and whom they had to deliver results (local or foreign supervisor).
Type of clients that they have serviced/worked with – to get a sense of the standards and requirements that they have had to respond to.
Level and kind of achievements – reveals what kind of performance and results they actually delivered in their previous roles.
