01/07/09, Staff blog: Life Is Difficult, But Not As Much So When You Have Passio
Blog Entry From Wang & Li Beijing Consultant C.W.

Several months ago, I saw “Life is Difficult” put on a friend’s MSN title.  I was curious and suspicious about why he did so.  From my understanding, his life should be happy.  He has a lovely son and a beautiful wife.  He also has his own company which is running well.  So why did he say that?!?

Time goes by and an unexpected event broke out almost overnight;  the global financial crisis.  At that time, I began hearing the expression Life is Difficult”from many different places at once.  One of my friends was laid off last week, while other friends are worrying about their current position.  When we approach candidates for new job opportunities, most are more cautious to consider a job change than before.  In such situations, a new word was populared “卧槽”.

During the holidays, we had a Christmas Party among our friends as usual.  It was a happy party with performances, gifts exchanging, 小品, etc.  Afterwards, when we discussed the quality of the party with some friends who are the same generation as me; we all said that we missed the past ones.  In the past, when we were young, we had great passion and had time to practice and prepare our games and performances, which made the parties excellent and memorable.  We miss those times, but we have to say that we can’t go back to the past.  Now, we have our families, baby, work, etc.  Everyone is keeping busy and has a lot of pressure every day.  Sometimes, we really feel that“Life is difficult.”

Larry, our CEO, is an ABC, or American Born Chinese.  Every Christmas, he flies back to America to be with his family.  Before he leaves, he throws a great party for all our Wang & Li colleagues.  This year, we went to an Italian restaurant to celebrate together.  As usual, each of us made a year-end toast.  “What should I say,” I asked myself.  This is the second time I’ve experienced a very difficult time while at Wang & Li (the first time was in 2000, during the Internet bubble). “What is the same and what is the different about Wang & Li?”  Suddenly, one thought came to my mind, “The market is down, but Larry’s passion is never down.  And as a result, Wang & Li’s passion is never down.”  “Exactly right,”I thought.  Every one of us only has one life.  We should live it with passion.

During the internet bubble and last worldwide, economic downturn, Wang & Li lost a lot, with only one office left among five global offices.  We’ve managed to recover since, even managing to be named recently the 2008 Recruitment Firm of the Year for China.  This time, I do not feel that the global financial crisis brings serious threat to Wang & Li.  Having been with the company back then, I can say that Larry has changed a lot from the past experience, but his passion has never changed.  We have confidence that both Larry and our management team have the ability needed to lead us and overcome this critical crisis. Yeah!

So although life can be difficult, with great passion, we can overcome whatever hard times we may come across!
