| 01/08/09, Staff blog: My Journey To And Within Wang & Li |
Blog Entry From Wang & Li Shanghai Consultant, M Y
My journey to Wang & Li was less straight forward than many other candidates seeking out a career in a human resource consulting & executive search firm. My background and passion is in information technology and I'm particularly intrigued where my background meets the field of executive search. In my opinion, an HR consulting firm plays a critical role in this intersection. For example, one of the most effective ways of bringing up-and-coming high calibre, international-oriented talents together with MNCs is to meet both of their mutual demands. So where does Wang & Li fit it in to all of this?
The skills I'll gain during my years as a consultant will provide me with a strong analytical foundation, which will serve me well, regardless of the path I choose down the road. Additionally, exposure to a diverse set of business models and industries will allow me to better understand what drives businesses and organizations to work efficiently and grow successfully. In terms of choosing Wang & Li specifically, I got the sense during the recruiting process that people were getting an unparalleled experience here, as well as also truly enjoying their day-to-day work and having fun with their peers.
My first case was sourcing a Human Resource Director candidate for a leading new media company. It was challenging from a client interaction standpoint, because it was clear that their management team and their business unit VPs didn't always agree on the best course of action for the company. As a new Wang & Li consultant, I felt like I had the support of everyone else, from the other consultant I was working most closely with, to the manager, and all the way up to the managing director. In particular, I formed a close working relationship with the consultant on my work process. During the case, everyone helped me to take on a larger and larger role, so that by the end of the case, I was planning my own work more independently and handling situations more effectively. It was a great start to being a consultant at Wang & Li.
Since joining Wang & Li, I've found myself surrounded by an amazing group of peers who enjoy their job, but don't take themselves too seriously. They have fun working with each other. But the "fun" of the job isn't just about the social events outside of work. It's the day-to-day work environment as well. Wang & Li’s culture makes all aspects of the job enjoyable, whether we're brainstorming how to solve our client's needs, getting tips from a case team leader during consultant meetings, talking about our weekly plans, or poking fun at each other for silly habits and tendencies. From it all, you can feel the level of trust and camaraderie among everyone. Even at the end of a long day or week, I still like hanging out with my colleagues outside of work, which speaks highly to how much we enjoy each other's company.
There may be a misconception that the Wang & Li culture is only for extroverts or is intimidating because of its "work hard, play harder" reputation. Since my first day in the office, any of those initial concerns were washed away. I've found Wang & Li to be anything but intimidating. The people are incredibly welcoming, have diverse backgrounds and interests, and above all, are extremely friendly and nice.
This culture influences me and those around me, as long as we believe in our mission to deliver outstanding services and solutions to our top candidates and clients with full passion and potential. Now I understand firsthand the reason why the award “2008 Recruitment Firm of the Year in China” came to us. As is often said by Larry, our founder & CEO, “We provide a benefit to each person we encounter.”
