Hiring Insights From A Long-Time,

Recruitment Professional

By Larry Wang

Recently, I was invited by the career center of a top mainland business school program to deliver a talk to a room full of their first year MBAs.  The career center wanted me to share with their students an insider’s perspective of what employers pay attention to most when assessing and selecting candidates in hiring situations.  By knowing what some of those things are, their students could also pay greater attention to them as well as they pursued their MBA and career success.

What We See Every Day

In fact, as professional recruiters, we have a unique view of the interviewing and decision-making process for the hiring situations that go on within leading, global companies.  Each day, we screen middle to senior managers for IT, consulting, financial services, consumer products and services, and manufacturing and manufacturing services industry positions.  In doing so, we end up assessing every type of bilingual/international-oriented candidate that you can think of, that include homegrown, returnee, regional, and overseas Chinese professionals, as well as Mandarin-speaking, non-Chinese professionals.  Most have reputable company backgrounds, as well as MBAs, attractive job titles, and other impressive credentials.

Adjusting To A Less Established, Company Situation

By Leila Liu

Over the years, our company has had many opportunities to place candidates in key management positions for the portfolio companies of our private equity and venture capital clients.  When talking to potential candidates who work in multinational or large international companies, they frequently ask me about whether their more established, company backgrounds working with well-trained colleagues will fit a more start-up, entrepreneurial situation, and if I think they can be successful in such an environment.

The Chance To Do More

I would say, from one aspect, their professional experience and understanding of international processes and standards will contribute greatly to a less mature environment that is trying to adopt such standards and business practices.  For those seeking the chance to take on a leadership role for their particular function, yet don’t see that opportunity coming soon in their current job, a start-up situation provides many more opportunities for them to set-up, lead, and drive a function and team.  In addition, such situations also provide them with opportunities make the kind of contributions that impact a business in a huge way.

New Career Development Book Preview!

Excerpt from Larry Wang's new career development book for mainland professionals, called How To DYFET, or How To Develop Yourself As A Future Executive Today, which is due out soon.

Chapter 11:

Your Self-Development:

Be Accountable For Your Own Career Development And Success

I recently delivered a workshop training for a client that was launching a new, two-year leadership development program, where 45 high potential participants were chosen from over 250 internal applicants.  The program was a significant investment by the company to develop its next generation of management leaders.

At the program’s kick-off event, the managing director for China came to address the participants with a few remarks.  He began by congratulating them for their being selected.  The main message he spent most of his time delivering, however, was that he wanted them to understand clearly that although their participation in the program was an excellent opportunity for their career development, it was not a guarantee for their success in the company.  What would determine that was how well they applied the key concepts and capabilities being emphasized in the program to their day-to-day work. <For full article>  top
