Building Capabilities Now That You'll Need Later On

by
Larry Wang

During the course of interviewing candidates for a management-level role that they have yet to hold, many will tell us of their certainty in their ability to learn quickly and perform in the role.  They'll say things like, "I know I haven't done it before, but if given the opportunity, I'm confident that I can do the job."  Or, they'll point out that they are "a quick learner."  I'm sure that they believe what they're saying to be absolutely true.  But that kind of pitch just doesn't sell well these days to multinational employers who are depending on a person to immediately and reliably step into a key role or responsibility in their organization.

"When looking to promote someone into a management role, I need to see if a person has demonstrated in some way the skills that he or she will need at that next level," reveals the former COO of a leading Internet portal in China.  "In other words, they have shown to a reasonable extent that they have already done what they will be doing in their next job."

Actually, a few years ago, companies were much more willing to give employees the chance
to prove themselves in new roles.  This was when business operations were less mature and very aggressive in their approach to making hiring and staffing decisions. There was also a greater shortage of talent in the market for many job function and industry backgrounds.<For full article>  top

Our Wang & Li Website Has A New Look!

(and is also in Chinese now!)

We have to admit that many of us in our company as well as many outside the company liked the look and feel of our previous Wang & Li website.  It seemed to represent our unique content, voice, and personality as a very candidate-friendly, recruitment firm that is committed to serving the job search and hiring needs of the China market.  As our company has grown and matured over the past three years, however, so must the channels in which we represent ourselves and reach others.  This can be seen clearly now through the new look of our recently re-launched Wang & Li website.

"
I think that people who visit our website now will find it to be even more user-friendly than before," says Richard Zhou, Wang & Li's operations manager.  "Although we always received a lot of positive feedback about our previous website, the new website definitely has a cleaner and sharper look to it.  We believe that it's more mature design and layout also better reflect the stature of our company in the market and the direction that our business is heading these days."

One of the changes we've made is the design of two clear entries on our homepage for "Employ
er Services" and "Job Seeker Services"for our clients and candidates to make it easier for them to find all relevant information on just one page, rather than having to search for information of interest throughout our website.  We've also added more ways for users to provide their feedback/add comments/ask questions on our content to increase the interaction and dialogue between ourselves and our clients and candidates.

Insights And Guidance

What Characteristics Do You Most Identify With A Strong Executive?

Before focusing your efforts on the things you need to do prepare yourself for future management, however, you should form a good understanding of what it takes to be a successful executive. You can begin by asking yourself what are the most outstanding qualities of a strong manager or business leader. Of course, the individual style and strengths of each successful executive are quite varied. Likewise, the list of qualities will vary for each person, depending on your own personal strength and the characteristic that you most admire and wish to emulate.

When I was in my mid-20s, as I was contemplating what it would take for me to evolve into a capable manager, I spent some time defining what kind of business leader I want to be. The characteristic I chose were mostly selected from those managers I looked up to and was fortunate to know. In my case, I’ve always identified with, and continued to emphasize today, the following four leadership attributes:
