Looking At China’s Employment Market,
One Year Later
(Part I)

(This is Part I of a two part article on China’s employment market.  Part II of this article can be seen in the next edition of our e-newsletter.)

A little over one year ago, I gave a CEO address, where I delivered three main messages to our staff here in China. My first message to them was essentially, “Get ready for the pain.” The impact from the worldwide financial crisis was already starting to affect the business and hiring plans of many of our global clients operating in the mainland. Tougher times were upon us in China too.

My second message, ala Forrest Gump, was something my momma used to always tell me, “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” For our entirely mainland staff who had yet to face a down market situation, I wanted them to know that sometimes you just have to go through and endure some difficult times. It’s beyond your control and just the way of the world at the moment.

And the last was, “Be ready for when things pick up again, because they will.” However bad it may get, at some point, better times will return. When they do, you want to be prepared to take advantage of the new opportunities that will present themselves. I believe this is typical what a lot of companies and professionals in this market experienced this past year. Today, one year later, many in China are seeing a promising year ahead as we get further into 2010.

The 2nd Annual Wang & Li Rocks, Paper, Scissors Tournament
And End-Of-Year Party

Dear Wang & Li Cup participants and guests,

Cheering and chanting crowds, intense head-to-head competition, spirited teams, clever and savvy players, such was the scene during our 2nd Annual Wang & Li Cup Rocks, Paper Scissors Tournament and End-Of-Year Party held in both Shanghai and Beijing last December. This year, we were very happy to see not only a much larger field of competitors for our event (30 teams in Shanghai and 20 teams in Beijing), but also many new companies joining the competition, such as those HR professionals, colleagues, friends, and family from Ebay,
Crocs, LG, Alcatel-Lucent, Sony-Ericcson, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Tudou, NYK Shipping and Nestle, and also from major media like International Business Magazine, China Daily, CBN Weekly Magazine, Economic Observer, and BNET.

“We were really excited to see our Annual Wang & Li Cup Rocks, Paper, Scissors Tournament catching on and enjoyed by more and more people,” says Rita Dong, Wang & Li Asia Resources’GM, “After facing such a tough business environment all year last year, the Tournament and End-of-Year Party were just a great way for us all to blow off some steam, get a bit loud, and have some big fun together."

“The Tournament was just a great way for us to celebrate surviving a very challenging year and doing it with many who also worked hard and supported us throughout the year, “says Leila Liu, Wang & Li’s Beijing Branch Manager. “And it’s really interesting how you can get to know the personality of others better through a rocks, paper, scissors match. I have to say that you don’t normally see such a fun-loving side from people in the HR profession during work hours, but that really came out during our Tournament.”

We’d like to thank all of this year’s rocks, paper, scissors participants for joining us, and extend a special thanks to all the sponsors who donated prizes for our event. And finally, congratulations to the team from NYK Shipping, our Wang & Li Cup Champions in Shanghai, and to the team from Sony-Ericcson, our Wang & Li Cup Champions in Beijing. We hope you all had a great time and we look forward to seeing many of you at our 3rd Annual Wang & Li Cup Tournament at the end of this year!

Upcoming Wang & Li China Job Market Video Conferences
And U.S. Roadshow Presentations

We are pleased to announce that Wang & Li’s annual U.S. roadshow of China job market presentations is now scheduled to happen in late March/early April. Our last year’s U.S. roadshow received excellent feedback from the many top MBA program and Asian-American professional organizations that hosted events featuring our CEO, Larry Wang, and GM, Rita Dong. This year, we look to repeat that success and value provided by again sharing our updated insights into China’s current job market situation and how to pursue career opportunities in the mainland.

"From the increased hiring activity that were experiencing with many of our global clients right now, we can definitely say that China’s job market has bounced back, which is a very good sign for those wishing to pursue career opportunities here," according to Dong. “In addition though, the mainland’s employment market has also matured quite a bit, both on the employer and talent sides. During our upcoming U.S. roadshow, we will not only talk about the changes taking place in China’s talent and hiring market in 2009, but also the main trends and opportunities that we’re seeing at this time. As always, our aim is to provide very practical and relevant information that will benefit anyone interested in attaining their career success in the mainland."

Our U.S. roadshow will mainly focus on presentation events with popular Asian-American professional organizations in major cities. Regarding delivering our China job market presentations to top U.S. MBA programs this year, because of the Spring break timing in early March of many programs and our inability to arrange a schedule that allows us to visit several of them before then, we will instead be arranging video conference presentations with MBA programs in late February/early March. “This allows us to get our updated China job market insights and info to as many students and as many MBA programs as we can before their Spring break, at a time when it is most beneficial for their China job search purposes,” says Dong.

Our upcoming U.S. roadshow includes stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and Boston, with presentation events scheduled with Asian-American organizations that include NECINA (New England Chinese Information Networking Association in Boston), NAAAP (National Association of Asian American Professionals in both Boston and San Francisco), TAP (Taiwanese American Professionals in Los Angeles), NYTFA (New York Taiwanese Finance Association in New York ). In addition, we will also participate in this year’s Harvard Asia Business Conference as China career panelist and presenter again. Video conference events are being scheduled by MBA student groups at UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Chicago, Northwestern, Columbia, MIT and the California International Business School Consortium, among others.
